May ’20 Monthly TBR

I like sharing what books I’m planning on reading each month and it also helps me remember which books I want to read. I actually look back at this post periodically throughout the month– I’ve lost counts of the amount of times I’ve double-checked it and realized I had forgotten about a buddy read!!

So, what exactly is on my TBR this month….

»Group/Buddy Reads

Sin & Lightning (Demigods of San Francisco, #5)Orientation Week (Breakbattle Academy #0.5)Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1)Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1)Forged by Desire (London Steampunk, #4)Pirate Nemesis (Telepathic Space Pirates #1)

This first weekend Sin & Lightning and Orientation Week are on the schedule for buddy reading. I’m running behind on my Hollows re-read, so I need to read Dead Witch Walking and the second one The Good, The Bad, and the Undead. Magic Bites is another monthly group read, just starting this month. Forged by Desire and potentially the fifth book are also on the table as potentials. And Pirate Nemesis is a group read.

So, so many buddy and group reads this month.

Monthly Goals

ARCs: Go big or go home, yeah? I want to try to read 10 ARCs in May.

Reviews: Uuuuggghhhhh minimum goal? keep the books I need to review under 100. My actual goal? I want to get it down to 50.

Misc: This month I want to listen to more audiobooks and perhaps even start a podcast. I’ve been enjoying playing audiobooks in the background and think podcasts could be a good alternative too.
It would also be great if I could fit more stretching in. I’ve been sitting way too much or laying down for long stretches of time– forgetting to get up. So, stretching and getting up regularly would be key.

What will you be reading this month?

My last monthly wrap up of 2019 — my wrap up of the year will be coming soon! For now though, this is how I ended my year!

Last month I read 44 books*!
*counting novellas and graphic novels

Not the least amount I’ve read in a month… but it is the second to last amount. I’m not sad though– I still like this amount!

Here are the top 10 books I read this month:

Back to having a hard time picking a top 10– I read some AWESOME books in December! I decided not to include any re-reads in the running for top 10 this month.

Seven Blades in Black (The Grave of Empires, #1)Cosmoknights (Cosmoknights, #1)Him (Him, #1)Beastars, Vol. 1Pumpkinheads

Heartsong (Green Creek, #3)Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1)The Merciful Crow (The Merciful Crow, #1)Baby & the Late Night HowlersThe Lost and the Chosen (The Lost Sentinel, #1)

  • Seven Blades in Black by Sam Sykes
Only a three star rating, but this is one I do think about on occasion and I see myself recommending. It made the list, by continuing to catch my attention.
  • Cosmoknights by Hannah Templer
A graphic novel I found randomly on Hoopla. Beautiful art and amazing story. I can’t wait to read more!
  • Him by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy
I’m a sucker for hockey romances, especially ones this cute.
  • Beastars, vol. 1&2 by Paru Itagaki
I borrowed these volumes from a coworker and LOVED reading it!
  • Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks
Probably the cutest book I read last month.
  • Heartsong by TJ Klune
I think every book of this series has made my monthly top 10 lists…
  • Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
So fun, but also my heart is still in such pain…
  • The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owens
This was a ton of fun! I can’t wait to see what happens next.
  • Baby + The Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon
Just… UGH I loved every minute of reading this one. I just wish it was longer so it didn’t have to end.
  • The Lost and The Chosen by Ivy Asher
Wow, this book took me by surprise! I’ll be continuing it ASAP.

Book Haul

I actually hauled quite a lot (for me) this month. And some gooooood stuff ^_^

Christmas in the CityThe Coldest Girl in ColdtownDeath Knell (Foundling, #3)Good Boy (WAGs, #1)Stay (WAGs, #2)

Christmas in the City was my only free book of the month AND the only one I read. It was a great pick and I’m pretty sure I’ll re-read it next year.
Google Play gave me a $5 credit for an eAudiobook! I couldn’t pass up using it, so I picked up The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, a book I’ve considered re-reading.
Then I grabbed a $3 credit from Google Play and picked up Death Knell.
Last up, I noticed Good Boy and Stay had been withdrawn from the library, so I grabbed both at the booksale for $1! Having the spin-off of Him means I’ll have to buy that series eventually 😁

Reading Challenges/Goals Update

–I’ll be going over this in my 2019 Wrap-up so I’ll skip this portion, except for…

»Additional Monthly Goals….

Read 10 ARCs — I read 11!!! I’ve never read so many in one month before. Sure, a few of these were DNFs, but STILL! This is such progress. I’m so happy.
….now I just need to review them.

October reviews done & ARCs reviewed — I reviewed all my books through November 💃🏻🎉, but I still have so, so many ARCs that need reviews. I’ll count this as a half win.

I wanted to get more resumes out into the world — instead I accepted a job offer!
I wanted to keep up in the shows I’ve previous started… I did watch more Supernatural and I crocheted A TON! But, I picked up Bob’s Burgers. Which… I’m okay with. This has been a nice change.

Final Thoughts

What a great way to end the year. I read so many great books and I got sh*t done! I’m proud of myself ^_^

I’m ready to start 2020!!

Look forward to my 2019 wrap up coming soon!

October ’19 Wrap Up

Okay, between being sick, family visiting, and a weird slump, last month I read the least amount of books in a long time…

Last month I read 22 books*!
*counting novellas and graphic novels

This is half of what a have been reading and a third of what I was reading in the beginning of the year. While part of me keeps thinking this is bad–it isn’t! Doing other things is fantastic for my mental health haha.

Here are the top 5 books I read this month:

The Blacksmith Queen (The Scarred Earth Saga, #1)Grimoire NoirGideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1)The Girl With All the Gifts (The Girl With All the Gifts, #1)The Graveyard Book

  • The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken
Hilarious author and reading this made me start re-reading the Dragon Kin series.
  • Grimoire Noir by Vera Greentea & Yana Bogatch
While the storyline left much to desire, the artwork here is so, so beautiful I’d want to hang pictures on my wall.
  • Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Honestly this one might make my top list for the year.
  • The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey
I love out of the box zombie books and this one worked for me.
  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Love, love, LOVE this full cast audiobook.

Book Haul

Trick or Treat in New Jersey: A Halloween Adventure Through the Garden State

Of all things, this is the book my mom bought me when she came to visit. I think I mentioned how it is cute and I bought one for my library annndd so she bought it for me?

Reading Challenges/Goals Update

✔ Goodreads Reading Challenge

Currently surpassed my goal by 100%… I read a ton of short books and have absolutely no life… I was trying to change this.

»Pop Sugar Reading Challenge

38/52.
No progress. I need to decide if I’m going to push myself through, orrrr ignore it. I might just ignore since I’m having so much more fun mood reading.

»Read More Childrens/Middle Grade books

No progress this month….

»Read More Diverse Books

I actually feel decent about this one!!

»Series TBR Takedown

Giving up on this one since I never feel like reading these books.

»Take Time to NOT Read

I visited with family, I started playing 3 mobile games, I started some anime shows — there were many days this month were I did not read. It felt stressful, but I also want to read again which is nice.

»Additional Monthly Goals….

I pretty much threw these goals out the window. Except, I did read more thrillers and horror books intentionally. It diversified my reading a bit which was nice…. even if I read like no ARCs :/

Final Thoughts

I need to take a break from requesting ARCs because I barely read them.

Not reading makes me want to read more — go figure.

Only a 4 star from me, but this is one I’ve thought about quite a lot and I even recommended my colleagues buy it for our library.
  • Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong
I’m becoming such a fan of Kelley Armstrong. I LOVE this series.
  • Dream by Natalia Jaster
A good ending to the series. I’ll miss these characters *cough* Poet *cough*
  • Let’s Get Textual by Teagan Hunter
UGH geeks and guys in glasses are my weakness and add in a great sense of humor and being just plain nice?! Zach is the best and the dialogue between the characters if FABULOUS.

  • All For the Game Series by Nora Sakavic
I read this series two weeks ago and I’m still not over it yet. I blame it for this weird slump I’m in.
  • Captive Prince series by C.S. Pacat
Wishing I hadn’t read this series right after AftG , to be honest, but it is so amazing it still shined through my book hangover. I’ll be visiting this series again and checking out more by this author.

    I NEED MORE!
  • Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren
GIRL POWER and hockey and a cute-ass romance.

Book Haul

Getting Wilde (Immortal Vegas, #1)Winter Princess (Daughter of Winter, #1)Silent Blade (Kinsmen, #1)

Getting Wilde and Winter Princess I picked up for free from Amazon. Silent Blade I got for a dollar, because I had a credit and I mean… it’s Ilona Andrews, I’m sure I’ll like it.

The Foxhole Court (All for the Game, #1)The Raven King (All for the Game, #2)The King's Men (All for the Game, #3)

Yeah, halfway through The Foxhole Court I knew I wasn’t going to be able to wait for the next book to come in from the library, so I spoiled myself and snapped them up. I made the right call here folks. This is a series I know I’ll read again.

Reading Challenges/Goals Update

»Goodreads Reading Challenge

2019 mar update

Yeah, I should give up even thinking I’ll get out of the house and do things. Although, it is getting warmer, sooooo maybe I’ll slow down?

»Pop Sugar Reading Challenge

I’ve completed 29/52 prompts! Not bad 😁

»Read More Childrens/Middle Grade books

I’m still sitting at about 5% here when I want to hit 20%…. I should try harder.

»Read More Diverse Books

Honestly, I’m paying more attention now and I’m definitely reading more LGBT+ books. I do need to make sure I’m reading Own Voices ones though…

»Series TBR Takedown

Yeah totally failing here…

The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #2)

This year I’ve been doing a TON more mood reading. I think my challenges are too specific for my tastes, so I’ll just have to be okay with not completely them.

»Take Time to NOT Read

hahahahahahahahaha I’m failing so hard on this, but it is hard to care when all I want to do it read, you know?

Unfortunately, I’m in a semi-slump. So, I’m going to try taking a day or two a month to just NOT read.

How did your reading in March go?
What was the best book you read?
